This is not an exhaustive list of medical services available in Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui. The British Consulate General in Shanghai cannot take any responsibility for the quality of the medical care provided by those hospitals listed below.
The standard of Chinese hospitals varies in different parts of China, and English-speaking doctors may not always be available in a public hospital. It would assist immensely to have a Chinese speaking person go with you. Doctors do not normally do home visits, so in case of illness you should go to one of the hospitals mentioned below.

What to do in Case of Emergency
In case of an emergency you can dial 120. Unfortunately, there is no English-speaking service available yet, so will you have to be able to give your address in Chinese and provide details of the number of persons ill or injured as well as the kind of their illness or injuries. There is a fee for the ambulance service which normally starts from 30RMB and each kilometre cost additional 5RMB, and there will be charges for any treatment that occurs.
Whilst the emergency service can be well organised, there have been reports of long delays in waiting for Ambulances. If in doubt you will need to take the ill patient yourself to the nearest hospital that provides emergency treatment. If you do go via an ambulance you have to bear in mind the traffic in Shanghai. Traffic rarely gives way to ambulance services. All injured persons will be conveyed to the nearest hospital.
In case of emergency do not hesitate to consult a hospital without a foreign nationals’ wing, as you will still be treated in any case. Take your identity card and cash with you, since a number of local hospitals do not accept credit cards. If an operation is necessary, there usually has to be a deposit in cash. In case of a genuine emergency, however, you have 24 hours to pay for the treatment.
Repatriation Services
It is recommended that you check with your insurance company in your home country whether or not repatriation costs are covered. If this is not the case, you are advised to ensure you have repatriation insurance in place. This is also recommended when travelling in China.
The attending physician will decide if an evacuation of the patient is necessary and decide if the patient to be transported by a scheduled plane or a flying ambulance. The latter is very expensive. If a patient has to be taken to Hong Kong or back to his home country, you can contact SOS, for example:

For those who are not able to communicate in Chinese:
If you need any help with translations, e.g. in the case of an accident, you can call the “Shanghai Call Center” at 96 22 88, a 24-hour hotline hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Government. The staff of the Shanghai Call Center provide everybody with information about what’s going on in Shanghai but can also serve as interpreter over the phone. It is free of charge and based on local telephone rates.
