London 2012 coin launch in China (30/10/2009)

London 2012 coin

Chinese and UK coin companies have joined to celebrate the countdown to London 2012 by attending the Royal Mint’s unveiling in China of their biggest ever commemorative coin programme in honour of the London Olympic and Paralympic games.

The British Ambassador to China, Sir William Ehrman, hosted the launch event at his Residence in Beijing today.

Olympic table tennis gold medallist Deng Yaping was present to show her support for the UK games.

Building on the success of the world’s first Olympic Games coin hand over ceremony in Beijing last August 2008, Royal Mint, the UK coin maker issued a new £5 coin counting down 3 years to the exciting event.

The Samlerhuset Group, an authorised coin distributor in China are making great efforts for the coins to reach Chinese collectors as soon as possible, which will enhance friendship and opportunity between China and Britain.

Phil Whyite, Head of Inward Investment for UK Trade and Investment said:

"The 2012 London Olympics is generating significant opportunities for Chinese companies seeking an investment destination or trade partnerships.  Overseas firms are able to benefit from the UK's Olympic success.  They can bid for, and secure, 2012 contracts.  By registering with CompeteFor (www.www.competefor.com), UK Trade & Investment will be able to work with those companies who have an interest in partnering a UK business and/or in establishing a presence in the UK."

The Countdown to London coin £5 coin is the first in a series of four beautifully crafted coins to be launched annually from now until 2012 and is available in gold proof, silver proof and cupro-nickel to Brilliant Uncirculated standard.
