Education
1982 – 1985: Trinity College, Cambridge (BA Hons Law).
Professional Life
1985: Joined Foreign and Commonwealth Office as Desk Officer for Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria in Eastern European Department.
1986-1988: Language training (Mandarin Chinese) initially at the School of Oriental and African studies, London, followed by a year at the American Institute in Taipei (Taiwan).
1988 – 1992: British Embassy, Beijing, as Second Secretary Political/Information.
1992 – 1994: On secondment to the Cabinet Office (Assessments Staff), as Desk Officer responsible for Middle East and International Terrorism issues.
1994 – 1996: Returned to the FCO as Head of the China Section (Far Eastern and Pacific Department).
1996 – 2000: British High Commission Canberra, Australia, initially as First Secretary Economic and Trade Policy, and subsequently as First Secretary Political.
2001: During the first half of 2001 completed a special project for FCO Consular Directorate, reviewing the operation of the Hajj Pilgrimage Committee. Also undertook 3 months basic language training in Lithuanian.
2001 – 2004: Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy Vilnius, Lithuania.
April 2005 – August 2006: On secondment as Deputy Chief Executive, International Financial Services, London.
