“Xian Ku, hou tian” (first bitter, then sweet) is how Tony describes his journey through China.  When his Chinese teacher asked him whether he’d like to take the easy route into China through well established universities in Beijing or the hard route living and studying in rural China, there was only one choice, and it had to be the hard way!

Half British, half Brazilian Tony finished his schooling at a military school in the UK and was awarded an English Speaking Union scholarship to study at Hotchkiss, a boarding school in the United States. It was there that Tony decided to take a class in Chinese which convinced him that China was the place for him.

Not until after he’d enrolled at a University in rural Chaozhou, did he find out he was the first, and indeed only foreigner, out of 13,000 students!  Although difficult at first, Tony found work at a cup making factory teaching English to the staff.  Tony then began a successful business exporting to Dubai.  However, after the credit crunch found himself out of work. Life was bitter.

Things changed for Tony after he entered a 12 week Health & fitness Challenge in Beijing.  In the process he lost 16kgs, won first prize, and most importantly came to the realisation that he should be focusing on what he knows best; leading people and personal fitness.  He started working for the Western Academy of Beijing (WAB), running personal training classes and is looking to set up his own personal training business in China.

Tony designed a four point programme: discipline, focus, commitment, and momentum. He teaches people of all sizes, ages, and personal circumstances, bringing discipline and order to their lives. Life is good for Tony, and he hopes it will only get sweeter.
