Defence

Enhancing mutual understanding between the People's Liberation Army and the British Armed Forces

The primary role of the Defence Section in Beijing is to represent British Defence related interests in China by enhancing mutual understanding between the People's Liberation Army and the British Armed Forces. Consisting of Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers of the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force, the Defence Section provides the point of contact for the Chinese Ministry of National Defence with the British Ministry of Defence and runs a varied and active programme of bilateral military activities. The programme comprises both high-level visits and exchanges at lower levels, one of the most visible being the hosting of Royal Navy ships by the PLA Navy.

One of the most important aspects of British Defence Diplomacy in China is co-operation on Peace Support and Peacekeeping Operations.   Through discussions, conferences and training the UK and China aim to share knowledge on preparing troops to serve on international peacekeeping operations and the conduct of peacekeeping operations.
